At the border
Two governments collect money on run day. Neither takes a card at the land gate, so cash planning is half the job.
File online at evisa.gov.kh before run day and you skip the on-arrival window entirely. The official fee is USD 36 and the visa is accepted at the Bavet land gate. You walk up, get stamped, done. Stockouts of visa stickers at Bavet have been reported around Tet and Khmer New Year, which is exactly when the pre-arranged e-visa earns its keep.

A border run only resets your clock if you have a fresh visa ready for re-entry. The desk handles that part so Moc Bai is a formality on the way home.

Filing it yourself on evisa.gov.vn is free of service fees but you own the photo rules, the payment step, and any correction round-trips.

The Cambodia visa desk wants crisp, unfolded US bills. Torn or heavily marked notes get refused. A mix of 10s and 20s covers the USD 30 fee without fishing for change.
The nearest reliable cash machines are back in Phan Thiet. Sort your cash before pickup, because at 10 in the morning at Moc Bai there is no good backup plan.
Nothing on the road is added to your bill. The quoted price is the price, which is why the private car number looks higher than a van seat and still ends up cheaper per head for a couple.
Same-day bookings are sometimes possible, but the 90-day e-visa desk needs lead time, and the Cambodia e-visa takes about three working days. Early booking also locks your preferred pickup slot on the strip.
Mui Ne specifics
The private car is 4,200,000 VND per car, which suits two or three travelers. Two people split it to 2,100,000 VND each, three to 1,400,000 VND each. The shared seat is 1,400,000 VND per person and is the usual pick for solo travelers.
