265 km, about five hours each way, one border gate, and a morning window that decides how the whole day goes. Here is the road, leg by leg.
The Mui Ne run is not a quick hop. Nobody in Ham Tien wakes up, drives to Cambodia for lunch, and is back for a sunset kite session. It is a 265 km haul each way, most of it on the two fastest roads in southern Vietnam, and it eats a full day. What surprises first-timers is how ordinary the day feels once you know the shape of it: early start, one food stop, a border that takes under an hour, and home before dark.

The road
Five segments. The first two are fast, the middle one is where the day can wobble, and the last stretch is the quietest road of the trip.
About 25 minutes down Nguyen Dinh Chieu, past the fairy stream and the fishing village, over the Ca Ty river bridge and through town. If your hotel is down towards Mui Ne village instead, add another fifteen minutes of coastal road. This is the only part of the drive where you see the beach.
99 km of four-lane expressway that opened in April 2023, and the reason the Mui Ne drive is tolerable at all. Cruising speed sits near 120 km/h, the road is smooth, and you clear Binh Thuan and drop into Dong Nai in under an hour and a half.
Off the expressway and onto QL1A heading west. Container trucks, motorbikes carrying everything you can imagine, and the only stretch where a stalled lorry can cost you half an hour. Drivers aim to pass this section before 08:00 for exactly that reason.
QL22 runs northwest and gets noticeably calmer past the city edge. Rice paddies on both sides, the odd roadside stall selling banh trang, and two towns that both claim to make the best rice paper in the country. This is where the food stop usually happens.
Rubber plantations, Ba Den mountain off to the right on a clear day, then the border economic zone and the gate itself. Once you spot the duty-free buildings on the left you are a couple of minutes from the Vietnamese departure hall.

Timing
Five hours is the normal number between October and April. Two conditions reliably push it longer.

At the gate
Moc Bai is the busiest land crossing between Vietnam and Cambodia, and on a weekday morning it is also one of the easiest.
You hand over your passport and get the exit stamp. No forms. Mid-morning the wait is usually 20 to 40 minutes, less if you beat the sleeper buses out of Ho Chi Minh City.
Roughly 300 metres of flat pavement between the two immigration buildings, lined with duty-free shops, money changers and food stalls. An electric cart runs the stretch for about 25,000 VND if the sun is winning.
Cambodia stamps you in here. Visa on arrival is USD 30 in clean cash with a passport photo. With an e-visa filed at evisa.gov.kh you join the shorter lane and skip the paperwork.
Then you turn around. Most run clients walk straight from the Bavet entry window to the Cambodian exit desk, get stamped out, and walk the 300 metres back to the Vietnamese entry hall with the new e-visa already approved. Our driver waits on the Cambodian side or at the agreed spot on the Vietnamese side, and you are usually rolling again within the hour.
Hours and rules
Listings for the Moc Bai and Bavet crossing give a daily window from around 06:00 through to late evening, and the economic zone behind the gate trades roughly 07:00 to 18:00. Immigration desks on both sides slow down well before closing though. Arriving at 16:00 is a gamble, and arriving at dusk is a wasted drive from Mui Ne.
Cars leave Phan Thiet around 05:30, reach the exit hall near 10:00 and have both stamps finished before noon. That is inside the quiet part of the day, before holiday traffic and the Cambodian lunch lull.
The border economic zone allows 500,000 VND of duty-free goods per person per day. Alcohol and tobacco are capped at 100,000 VND with buyers over 18, and anything over the limit is taxed like any normal import. Buy coffee if it makes you happy, but do not plan the trip around shopping.
Fixers work both sides of Moc Bai. Standard stamps are free, the only official charges are the Cambodia visa fee and the Vietnam e-visa you filed yourself, and no one can jump you forward in the queue for a few hundred thousand dong. Same gate, different day
Moc Bai is about 70 km from central Ho Chi Minh City. Agencies there can collect a client at 07:00, cross both borders, and have them back in District 1 by mid-afternoon. From Mui Ne you are adding another 200 km and roughly three hours of driving each way, which changes the product completely.
Practically, that means one early departure instead of a flexible day, a private car rather than a shuttle, and a fixed crossing window so the return leg does not land in evening traffic. If you happen to be starting in the city rather than on the beach, the HCMC desk handles that side of the corridor and prices it differently because the road is shorter.
